Sacramento
Sacramento, the capital of California, lies in the north of the Central Valley at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers. It is the state's sixth-largest city, with around 471 thousand inhabitants, and the economic and cultural centre of the region. In 2002 it was named the most ethnically and racially integrated city in the USA. Sacramento has hot summers and mild winters, and the best times to visit are spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate. The historic sites linked to the gold rush are well worth seeing.
